In my work I have thought about how new discoveries have or have not been communicated to the public and how scientific advances have or have not been contributing to the betterment of people’s lives and health.
I have done a series of patterns inspired by genetically modified plants and animals. The DNA can now be manipulated, patented and owned. How can we feel safe that these new techniques will be securely and effectively regulated?
Since the myths surrounding genetical engineering is running wild I’ve had difficulties to discriminate facts from fiction. Therefore I have turned to fantasy. I have tried to create a world of illustrated patterns that is somewhere in between fact and fiction without having any clear answers and I have sought in the history of mankind to find perspective.
In my patterns I have drawn inspiration from medieval symbolism and visual arts around the turn of the century 1500, when new continents and cultures where discovered. Earth had been flat and suddenly it was discovered to be round. Mankind had been the center of the universe and suddenly we found ourselves in the periphery.
Just like we did back then, humanity now faces big changes. We have no more continents to discover, but I believe that the changes we’re facing due to genetic engineering will be just as overwhelming.
I mitt arbete har jag funderat över teknologiska framsteg, hur nya upptäckter har kommunicerats eller inte kommunicerats och hur vetenskapliga framgångar har bidragit eller inte bidragit till att förbättra människors liv och hälsa.
Jag har gjort en serie mönster som handlar om genetiskt modifierade grödor och djur.
Den genetiska arvsmassan kan numera manipuleras, patenteras och ägas. Hur ska vi
kunna känna oss trygga i att dessa nya tekniker kommer vara säkra och effektivt reglerade?
Eftersom mytbildningarna kring gentekniken löper amok, har jag haft svårighet att fastställa fakta.Jag har därför valt att hänge mig åt fantasin. Den bildvärld jag försökt skapa handlar om att vistas i gränslandet mellan fakta och fiktion utan att kunna få några klara svar och jag har sökt i mänsklighetens historia för att få perspektiv.
Till mina mönster har jag hämtat inspiration från medeltida symbolik och bildkonsten kring sekelskiftet år 1500, då nya kontinenter och kulturer upptäcktes. Jorden hade varit platt, plötsligt var den rund. Mänskligheten hade varit centrum av universum, plötsligt
befann vi oss i periferin.
Nu som då står mänskligheten inför stora förändringar. Vi har inga fler kontinenter att upptäcka, men jag tror att genteknikens framsteg kommer innebära minst lika omvälvande förändringar.
