The word typography comes from the Greek words typos, meaning form, and graphe, meaning writing. With this definition as the point of departure, I have been exploring the act of marking a surface by hand. Typographic Whispers is the result of a workshop where people were asked to visually interpret the sound of letterforms drawn by hand. I asked the participants to listen to the direction of the pen and the shape of the line, not revealing the source of the sound piece. When reading a text we know how to pronounce the letters we see, but what does the sound of an L or an I look like? Is it possible to separate an N from an A?
Ordet typografi kommer av grekiskans typos, som betyder form, och graphe som betyder skriva. Med denna definition som utgångspunkt har jag utforskat den handling det innebär att märka en yta för hand. Typographic Whispers är resultatet av en workshop där deltagarna fick göra visuella tolkningar av ljudet av bokstäver som skrevs för hand. Jag bad dem lyssna till pennans riktning och linjens form, utan att avslöja källan till ljudet. När vi läser en text vet vi hur bokstäverna ska uttalas, men hur ser ljudet av ett L eller I ut? Går det att skilja ett N från ett A?
