Habits and Habitats is an exploration of the different ways in which people develop within a certain space and the traces they leave behind. In other words, my research deals with houses, homes and the difference between a house and a home.
The subject emerged from the very confusing situation I found myself in when I moved to Sweden to attend Konstfack. The most acute problem that had to be addressed as a newcomer to this city was the impossible housing situation here. In my desperate hunt for somewhere to live, I found myself in the middle of strangers’ homes, as I came to look at their rental rooms.
In turn, being a new arrival, an immigrant, made me think about what I had left behind; my previous life, my family, my culture and my nation. The clash between the old and the new life taught me the meaning of a concept I hadn’t encountered before—“Culture Shock”. This phrase summarizes my time in Sweden and the resulting works of art were developed in this state of mind.
Habits and Habitats is also an investigation of the traditions, specifically in craft, of my native Romania, seen from a new point of view as a migrant outside the country. Now is the right time to ask ourselves what will be the role of traditional craft within the next few decades? How will it be practiced, what forms of existence will it take, who will carry the traditions and how?
The investigation follows a development in my thinking over several years. My final art project at Konstfack, which I call The Room, is a synthesis of all my previous art creations. There is a straight line to this work, starting from my Bachelor’s project in Bucharest. Over the two years since, the elements of my final work have presented themselves one by one, in the form of short-term projects, all of which have relevance for the final piece.
I Habits and Habitats utforskar jag människors olika sätt att utvecklas på en viss plats och de spår de lämnar efter sig. Med andra ord handlar min undersökning om hus, hem och skillnaden mellan ett hus och ett hem.
Ämnet kom upp till följd den mycket förvirrande situation jag befann mig i när jag flyttade till Sverige för att gå på Konstfack. Det mest akuta problemet jag hade att hantera som nykomling i den här staden var den omöjliga bostadssituationen. Min desperata jakt efter någonstans att bo ledde till att jag plötsligt befann mig mitt i främmande människors hem, när jag kom för att titta på deras uthyrningsrum.
Att vara nykomling och invandrare fick mig i sin tur att tänka på det jag hade lämnat bakom mig: mitt tidigare liv, min familj, min kultur och mitt land. Kollisionen mellan det gamla och det nya livet fick mig att förstå innebörden av ett begrepp som jag inte stött på tidigare – ”kulturkrock”. Ordet sammanfattar min tid i Sverige, och de resulterande konstverken har kommit till i denna sinnesstämning.
Habits and Habitats utforskar också mitt hemland Rumäniens traditioner, särskilt inom hantverk, så som de ter sig för en utvandrare som befinner sig utanför landet. Det är nu vi måste fråga oss vilken roll det traditionella hantverket kommer att spela under de kommande årtiondena. Hur kommer det att utföras, i vilka former kommer det att finnas, vem ska föra traditionerna vidare och hur?
Undersökningen följer en utveckling i mitt tänkande under flera år. Mitt avslutande konstprojekt på Konstfack, som jag kallar The Room, är en sammanfattning av alla mina tidigare konstverk. Det går en rak linje till det här arbetet från mitt kandidatprojekt i Bukarest. Under de två år som gått sedan dess har delar av mitt avslutande verk dykt upp en efter en i form av kortare projekt som alla har betydelse för det slutgiltiga verket.
