Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2014 / Vårutställning 2014
During my studies in the Ädellab department at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, I have become more aware of the isolation that the field of contemporary art jewellery is currently facing. As I see it, contemporary art jewellery makers and their jewellery are disconnected from everyday life and people. It seems that the difficulty to relate to “our kind of jewellery” divides jewellery from people and their bodies. It’s not worn. Therefore, in my project, I have investigated this separation between “insiders” and “outsiders” — those who don’t have exposure or connection to the field as creators, gallerists, collectors or as other practiced art audiences — and I looked for solutions to bring these two groups closer together through a cooperative jewellery art project called Primitive Motives.
Primitive Motives aimed to question participant’s motives about wearing jewellery and gave them an option to take part in the process of making jewellery so that they could gain personal experience and more exposure to the practice of contemporary art jewellery. Ten participants from Finland, Europe and Africa were found through social media pathways to participate in the project. They are almost equally women and men from about 20 to 60 years of age.
Under mina studier vid Ädellab på Konstfack har jag blivit mer medveten om hur isolerat området för modern smyckekonst är idag. Så som jag ser det är både skaparna av den moderna smyckekonsten och deras smycken avskurna från vardagslivet och människorna. Svårigheten att förhålla sig till ”vår typ av smycken” tycks skapa ett avstånd mellan smyckena och människorna och deras kroppar. Smyckena bärs inte. Därför har jag i mitt projekt undersökt uppdelningen mellan de som är initierade och de som inte är det, dvs. de som saknar anknytning till området i egenskap av designer, gallerist eller samlare och inte heller på annat sätt tillhör den vana konstpubliken. Jag har också letat efter lösningar som skulle kunna föra de två grupperna närmare varandra genom ett kooperativt smyckekonstprojekt kallat Primitive Motives.
Primitive Motives syftade till att ifrågasätta deltagarnas motiv till att bära smycken och gav dem möjlighet att delta i smyckenas skapandeprocess. Därmed kunde de få en personlig upplevelse av och större inblick i den samtida smyckekonstens praktiker. Tio personer från Finland, Europa och Afrika som ville delta i projektet hittades via sociala medier. Ungefär lika många kvinnor som män deltog, och de var från runt 20 till 60 år gamla.
